With national elections expected in 2027, Mitsotakis used the opportunity to signal both his government’s priorities and its confidence in delivering results.
At the heart of his plan is the Thessaloniki International Fair this coming September, where major policy announcements are expected. The event will mark a critical milestone for the government, not only in showcasing ongoing infrastructure projects and reforms but also in rolling out fresh economic measures aimed at bolstering household incomes.
Mitsotakis emphasized that many of the government’s current initiatives, including wage hikes and tax cuts, will begin to yield visible results. “In the next two years,” he told citizens, “you will see these projects completed and the benefits of our economic policy directly reflected in your everyday lives.”
The Prime Minister also hinted at additional support for pensioners, including the potential reintroduction of a so-called “13th pension,” along with further tax reductions for the middle class. These moves come amid shifting global dynamics and a fragile economic environment in Europe, yet Athens insists that its fiscal plans remain intact.
One of the more intriguing developments involves foreign policy. There is growing speculation about a potential meeting between Mitsotakis and former U.S. President Donald Trump, now a frontrunner in the 2024 American presidential race. While discussions are still underway, both sides reportedly see such a meeting—possibly in Washington before the summer—as a chance to reaffirm diplomatic and economic ties.
The Greek government believes its cautious, low-key approach to recent transatlantic trade tensions has paid off, especially after Trump announced a temporary suspension of new tariffs on the EU.
Mitsotakis also positioned Greece as a reinvigorated player on the European stage. “We’ve left behind the era when Greece was seen as Europe’s problem child,” he said. “Today, we sit with confidence and dignity at the table of European leaders, shaping the continent’s future.”
